Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Sweep in Jacksonville: What to Know First
We’re an independent Gelco service provider in Jacksonville, and we sweep and inspect Gelco fireplaces and stoves the same week you call in most cases. A standard Gelco chimney sweep in Jacksonville runs $189 – $279, including a visual check of the unit, the flue, and the termination cap. Repairs are quoted separately, in writing, before anything gets touched. If you own a Gelco unit and you’re not sure when it was last cleaned, or you’ve noticed the glass sooting up faster than it used to, call (904) 453-7823 and we’ll walk you through what you’re seeing.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Gelco builds solid units. Most of what we see in Jacksonville homes isn’t manufacturing defect, it’s environment and deferred maintenance. Here’s what actually shows up on the job:
- Creosote glazing on Gelco wood-burning units. Jacksonville’s damp winters push people to burn more, often with wood that hasn’t fully seasoned. Gelco fireboxes hold heat well, but the flue runs cooler on low burns, and that’s how creosote builds into a hard, shiny glaze. We remove it with rotary brushes, not just a hand sweep. If we’re seeing Stage 2 or Stage 3 glaze, we’ll tell you plainly, because that’s a chimney fire waiting for the right conditions.
- Glass door sooting on Gelco direct-vent gas units. If your Gelco gas fireplace logs or the inside of the glass are turning black more quickly than they used to, that’s usually a sign of improper gas-to-air mix, often from a partially blocked burner port or a deteriorating gasket. It’s not normal, and it’s not cosmetic. We’ll clean the burner assembly, check the venting path for any restriction, and verify the air shutter is set where Gelco’s engineering intends it.
- Gasket fatigue around the door frame. Gelco uses a fiberglass rope gasket around the door and glass frame on sealed combustion models. After enough Jacksonville cooling-to-burning cycles, that rope compresses and loses its seal, which changes how the unit drafts. You’ll notice it as a lazy flame or a faint smell of exhaust at start-up. We’ll replace the gasket with a high-density fiberglass rope that matches the original spec, not whatever’s cheapest on a supply shelf.
- Refractory panel cracking in older Gelco wood stoves. Those firebrick-style panels inside the firebox are called refractory panels, and they protect the steel shell from direct flame heat. Cracks smaller than the width of a nickel are usually fine. Anything wider than that, or panels that are starting to crumble, should be replaced before they expose the outer jacket. We stock common Gelco panel sizes and can order specific cuts when we need to.
- Termination cap blockage from Jacksonville wildlife. Gelco units vent through either a masonry chimney or a listed metal flue. Critters love both. We’ve pulled birds’ nests, squirrel debris, and yes, a raccoon nest out of a Riverside flue that had a Gelco insert at the bottom of it. A blocked termination cap isn’t a Gelco-specific flaw, but the sealed units are less forgiving of one, because they can’t draft around a partial blockage the way an open fireplace sometimes can.

Our Gelco Chimney Sweep Process
Here’s how a Gelco sweep job goes when you call us:
- 1
Call and describe the unit. You tell us the model, the fuel type, and what you’re noticing. If you don’t know the model, we’ll ask what it looks like and where it sits, and that’s usually enough to start.
- 2
Technician arrives announced. You get the tech’s name and photo before the truck leaves the shop. When he knocks, he’ll show you his photo ID badge. That’s the Threshold Standard, not a special request.
- 3
We protect the work area. Drop cloths in front of the hearth, a vacuum running, and we’re careful about the path from the door to the fireplace. You live here; we work here.
- 4
We inspect, then we sweep. The technician checks the firebox, the door gasket, the glass seal, the burner or grate assembly, and the flue from top to bottom. Then we sweep what needs sweeping, using brushes sized to your flue, and clean out the firebox, the smoke shelf, and the damper area on open wood units.
- 5
We report what we found. You get a plain-English recap of what came out of the flue and what condition the unit is in. If we think something needs repair, we’ll tell you exactly what, why, and what it costs in writing. Nothing gets repaired without your sign-off.
- 6
We stand behind the work. Every repair carries a written guarantee. If that repair fails within the coverage period, the second visit is free. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

AfterWhat Gelco Chimney Sweep Costs in Jacksonville
Most Gelco sweeps in Jacksonville fall between $189 and $279. A straight Level 1 sweep on a well-maintained unit is on the lower end. A Level 2 inspection, which we use a camera for and document with photos, adds $100 – $150 and is what we recommend before buying a home with a Gelco fireplace or if you haven’t had the flue looked at in more than three years.
- Standard Gelco sweep (wood or gas): $189 – $279
- Level 2 camera inspection: $100 – $150 additional
- Glass door gasket replacement: $85 – $160, depending on unit
- Refractory panel replacement: $140 – $320 per panel, depending on size
- Burner assembly cleaning and adjustment (gas units): $120 – $220
What moves the price: how long it’s been since the last cleaning, the severity of creosote buildup, whether the flue is easily accessible from the roof or requires a ladder setup, and whether any parts need replacing. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, every time. Call (904) 453-7823 for a free estimate on your Gelco unit.
Why Jacksonville Homeowners Call Alcott Chimney Jacksonville for Gelco Work
Ruben Castellano grew up in Los Angeles, learned the trade through hands-on coursework at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and spent years working chimneys up and down the West Coast before bringing that background to Jacksonville. He’s cleaned and inspected fireplaces from Riverside homes to properties near Friendship Fountain, and he keeps a running notebook of every unusual thing he’s pulled out of a firebox. Ask him about the raccoon nest sometime.
We haven’t been around since 2002 for nothing. Every technician who works on a Gelco unit is background-checked and identity-verified under the Threshold Standard. You’ll know the technician’s name and see their photo before we arrive, and they’ll show a photo ID badge at the door. Every job gets a written price before work begins, and every repair carries a written guarantee with a free return visit if it fails. When a Gelco unit needs a liner or a resurfacing product, we carry DuraFlex and HeatShield on the truck, because they’re the same names chimney professionals specify.
If you called someone else and got a voicemail at 11 p.m., you understand why we answer the phone with a live person around the clock. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
FAQs
No. Gelco’s warranty covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship, not routine maintenance. A professional chimney sweep using appropriate tools and following the manufacturer’s service guidelines is exactly what Gelco expects you to do. What does void warranties is neglected maintenance, which leads to failures that would have been caught early with a regular sweep.
Once a year for wood-burning Gelco units, and every other year for gas units, as long as you’re running them seasonally. Jacksonville’s humidity and our relatively mild winters mean people burn less here than in colder climates, but the moisture in the air can accelerate creosote hardening between sweeps. If you use a Gelco wood stove as a primary heat source, sweep it twice a year.
Where Gelco parts are available and make sense for the repair, yes, we order genuine OEM parts. Where a quality aftermarket substitute is an equal-or-better option, we’ll tell you that plainly and give you the choice. We will not install a cheap box-store part that shortens the life of your unit. Every parts decision is written down and explained before we turn a wrench.
Most Gelco sweeps in Jacksonville are scheduled within three to five business days. If you’re smelling smoke indoors or seeing visible soot on the walls above the fireplace, tell us when you call and we’ll prioritize you without putting you in front of someone whose scheduled maintenance can wait. We don’t promise same-day service we can’t deliver, but we do answer the phone live and tell you honestly where you stand.
Creosote keeps building, the flue narrows, the draft weakens, and smoke starts spilling into the room on start-up. On wood units, that creosote is what fuels chimney fires. On gas units, a blocked or partially blocked flue raises carbon monoxide risk in the home. Neither of those is worth the cost of a sweep. We’ll give you an exact quote for your Gelco unit. Call (904) 453-7823.
If you own a Gelco fireplace in Jacksonville and you’re ready for a sweep, an inspection, or just a straight answer about something you noticed, call (904) 453-7823. Estimates are free, and you’ll talk to a person, not a recording.
